DCF knocked on my door, now what?
If the Connecticut Department of Children and Families (DCF) has visited you, it’s crucial to understand what happens next in their investigation process. This can be a daunting and invasive experience, especially if you’re unsure of your rights and what to expect.
DCF has a lot of power in deciding what’s best for your children. Even with limited knowledge of your home life, they can quickly start an investigation that might disrupt your family’s stability
How Does a DCF Investigation Start?

DCF may receive reports of potential abuse or neglect through various channels. This includes reports from police responding to domestic violence incidents where children are present, statements made by children to teachers or doctors, or anonymous tips through DCF’s hotline. (mandated reporters)
Duration of a DCF Investigation
Typically, DCF has up to 45 days from receiving a report to complete their investigation. During this time, they’ll conduct a thorough assessment which may involve a home visit, interviews with family members, reviewing any previous DCF involvement or police reports, and speaking with individuals closely involved with the child’s life.

What Happens During a DCF Investigation?

During their investigation, DCF will gather information to determine whether there is reasonable evidence of abuse or neglect. This includes observing the child’s living conditions, talking with the child to understand their perspective, and consulting with others such as teachers or relatives.
Outcome of a DCF Investigation
At the end of their investigation, the DCF Commissioner determines whether allegations of abuse or neglect are proven. Based on their findings, they may substantiate the allegations, unsubstantiate, recommend placing the case on the central child abuse registry. They have several options: closing the case, moving it to ongoing status, or initiating neglect petitions. If they determine a child faces imminent risk of serious harm, they have authority to remove the child from your care.
